If like a lot of people you first saw “Mickey & the Beanstalk” not in theaters but on television (usually preceding a feature, like “Dumbo”) you are in for a bit of a surprise.

This DVD contains the theatrical version, where the animation is interspersed with live-action footage of people at a party, who are “telling” the story. This also means the wonderfully soothing TV-version narration (provided by Sterling Halloway, also voice of Pooh) is gone. The end result is that the cartoon drags on unnecessarily as the action is constantly interrupted by the live-action segments. Additionally, the live actors tend to get a bit chatty with their narration, and some of the humor they try to inject hasn’t aged well. With the capacity of the DVD medium, why couldn’t the TV version be tacked on as an extra?

Still worth owning (the beautiful animation and music can’t be derailed even by the mediocre live action footage)–but be warned.

Okay, I have been reading the other reviews on this movie, and they all say things like “went on for too long”…”Way overhyped”…and things like that. I beg to differ. The two movies in this wonderful DVD, Bongo and Mickey and the Beanstalk, are two family classics. As a child, I watched these two movies (on VHS, of course) over and over and over again. Willy the Giant characterizes my childhood in three words…”Potroast! Chocolate potroast!” And now, I know for a fact that my two little brothers have memorized the whole movie of Mickey and the Beanstalk. I don’t want to ramble on forever, but I just want to say that these two are the best movies that I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of movies.

Both Boris Pasternak’s extraordinary novel and David Lean’s magnificent film version are among my favorites of all-time. The story is basically about a poet/physician (Omar Sharif) who loves two women–his adoring wife, Tonya (Geraldine Chapin), and his enigmatic mistress, Lara (Julie Christie)–through the events of World War I and the Russian Revolution.

Robert Bolt’s screenplay balances the political upheaval with exquisite, heartwrenching romance–one of the few films to succeed at this level. Lean, who seemed to make a specialty of making films about illicit love (Brief Encounter, Summertime, etc.), also works a tightrope, giving the film the necessary grandeur and sweep required for an epic while never losing sight of the intimacy of the characters. He is aided considerably by a magnificent cast: Sharif, despite or perhaps because of his Egyptian background, provides the perfect perspective of an individual observing things around him, each time as if it were new–it’s a wonderful performance; Christie is simply luminescent; Chaplin nicely understated; and there’s terrific support from Alec Guinness, Rod Steiger, Tom Courtney, etc.

What makes Zhivago a must on DVD is the awe-inspiring cinematography of Freddie Young, who deservedly won the Academy Award. I was lucky to see Zhivago at a theater, on the big screen proper, several years ago when it was re-issued; unbelievably, the DVD transfer here is even BETTER!!! There are shots in this film that are simply jaw-dropping beautiful.

Doctor Zhivago is, like the book it’s based on, a challenging film that will reward the viewer with one of their most extraordinary cinematic experiences.

This is one of the rare times when I actually liked the movie more than the book. Omar Sharif, Julie Christie and Rod Steiger, especially, are just wonderful in David Lean’s adaptation of Pasternak’s epic love story. The script was beautiful and lacked nothing; the actors couldn’t have done a better job at delivering their lines. It was extremely well paced and never lagged or felt rushed. Maurice Jarre’s haunting score is just beautiful and weaves throughout the movie like a tapestry. The cinematography is beyond compare. The views of the Urals, the frozen Siberian tundra and the countryside in springtime (especially the daffodils!) will never be forgotten. In my opinion, one of the greatest movies ever, never to be forgotten.

I have to be honest, I have yet to see the game. However, after reading the synopsis of the show, I decided I had to check it out. The intrigue and enjoyment of the show is the ideas behind adding a human factor to the characters. A washed out father, kids who try to avoid him, a wife that left them all, and the appearance of a orbital frame with an A.I. that’s only begun to learn. All come together through the typical dysfunctional values of family and charge head first into what ever presents itself. In all, I loved it! The sound is good on the 5:1. The graphics are standard. The concept is fantastic! And, it’s all pulled together in a great little package of a plot that hits on the surface of family and duty. You’ll laugh and be thoroughly entertained. I definately recommend this one.

One of the best anime series I have ever seen. The story is phenomenal. It makes you think. Its not just battles and pointless killing. Its a great plot line about family, freedom, and struggling to make it in a cruel world; or worlds in this case. If you like a good story and appreciate these qualities in an anime, then I highly recommend you check this one out.

I have been very tolerant with previous ALF releases. They have all contained syndicated episodes. I didn’t care so considerable about the first season, because I objective figured that since the exhibit was no longer on TV, the DVDs were the only method to observe the reveal.

Then the second season came out, again in syndication. I bought it because the reveal collected was not on the air. Then I saw something monstrous. During one of the episodes in the second season, there was music substituted, and the episode was shorter than I’d seen on TV Land. That was downright unacceptable.

So now we’re at season three. Syndicated episodes again. This time one episode ran for under 19 minutes! I savor ALF, and abhor to witness him collect treated this intention.

The episodes are all astounding, and I’m aloof glad to believe the DVDs, but the syndication thing has got to discontinuance.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a recurring pattern with TV demonstrate box sets. The first season sets of both Roseanne and The Cosby Indicate were released in syndicated make. No studio in the world would ever dream of releasing edited movies, so why would so many want to release edited TV series? It’s unbiased rotten.

Season four will be out in September, or so I hear. I will probably purchase it honest to complete the state.

Again, Lionsgate plans to release the episodes in their syndicated format despite the distress of longtime ALF fans such as myself. Will they ever learn?

Wow! This season of 24 has been a mesmerizing thrill-ride unprejudiced like the previous three seasons, all of which had a expansive storyline, fine station twists, and many surprising outcomes. The animation here is first rate and the entire thing is shot like a live-action film with some fantastic long shots, big theatrical panning and even at one point, during Quasimodo’s song “Out There” a realistic camera flare (I did a double choose the first time I saw it!) Hunchback is filled with all sorts of immense “tricks” like this. Lighting effects here are nothing short of fine – often subtle they sometimes change in an instant dramatically altering the mood of the part. Frodo’s demonic song “Hellfire” is perhaps one the most foul and frightful moments to emerge from Disney and the animators let loose.

The prologue to the movie alone is a minor masterpiece and, like Beauty and the Beast, marvelously prepares us for the whirlwind of a yarn to select area.

The complaints about the singing and dancing gargoyles Victor, Hugo and Laverne, are simply wrongheaded. I read the Hugo classic too, and know they’re not in there. What the complainants fail to realize is these gargoyles live only in Quasimodo’s imagination. He invented these companions to ease an otherwise tortured, lonely, friendless life. The culmination of all of this becomes definite in the spectacular song “A guy like you” which finishes with pigeons flying and hearts and banners and ribbons and Quasimodo being illustrious and then BAM immediately upon the conclusion of the final notes, the room becomes the same black, dank, splintering tower filled with relics, junk and heartbreak. It’s one of the movie’s most shattering effects.

While deserved praise goes to the animators and crew, the thunder talent here is, in my idea, Disney’s very best. Tom Hulce goes to the very soul of Quasimodo and gives a performance that is as poignant and shattering as anything he has done (Hulce also happened to be the best Hamlet I’ve ever seen.) Determined lines (”I am a monster, you know”) will ring in my ear forever. Hulce has a fair speak and renders “Out there” with such abandon and vigor it makes my hair stand on kill. In the composed “Heaven’s light” (which sequences into a aesthetic shot of the bells frantically ringing the opening theme), Hulce brings a fragility to such lines as “no face as unpleasant as my face, was ever meant for Heaven’s light” that only a heart of stone would not be moved. Switching from pathos to rage, Hulce lets us feel the hidden rage and pains that this character also possesses. It is a truly great performance.

Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, Tony Jay, Paul Kandel – and the rest of the cast all sound at the top of their game creating fantastic and shimmering characters.

Alan Menkin and Stephen Schwartz secure to the heart of the matter with regain and songs – a sound – that are as integral a share of the telling of this myth as the animation and voices.

Hunchback is a miracle of a movie!

It would not be hard to examine a more difficult narrative line for Disney to adapt on cloak than Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, but that doesn’t mean it was a promenade in the park either. What of Claude Frollo’s lascivious desires for Esmerelda and wanton acts upon Quasimodo and gypsies? And that ending…a bit of a downer don’t you deem? Well, bear it or not, Disney stays proper to each of these facets of the recent…with the exception of the tragic conclusion, of course.

Talking gargoyles aside, the film really does not do enough to accommodate young viewers (and perhaps it was a mistake to market this as a kid’s movie, but you got to sell those Burger King toys somehow!) . The villain (Frollo) is among the most dismal characters ever portrayed in a Disney movie, and unlike Jafar (”Alladin”) or Hades (”Hercules”), there is nothing amusing about him. On the other hand, the animators went a miniature overboard with Quasimodo, who kinda looks like a red-headed Chris Farley. And Phoebus has the personality of Al Gore…if he were any more wooden you’d have to check him for termites. Also, some very spirited characters from the book are regrettably absent. Where’s Pierre Gringoire, Jehan Frollo, and Sister Gudule? Level-headed, the animation is breathtaking, and the finale is nearly flawless…preferred to unusual version if you’re a sentimental fan of blissful endings.

The movie contains a few hilarious subliminal references, as when Quasimodo (Tom Hulce) is dressed up briefly as Amadeus. The music is wonderful and supports the film’s most compelling scenes: Esmerelda singing “God Befriend The Outcasts” while taking sanctuary in the cathedral, the counterpoint of Quasimodo’s “Heaven’s Light” to Frollo’s “Hell Fire,” and the heart-pumping regain gradual the finale. Probably would have been given a PG rating if not for Eisner’s influence over MPAA.

A light, clever, and often humorous film to appreciate as you dream of sunny days basking in romance and beauty.

So you’ve unprejudiced gotten home from a rough day at the office, or your unhappy about something and wish you could recall a spur of the moment roam to oh so relaxing and romantic Italy (preferably Lake Como!) . For most of us, this can’t fair happen, so I reveal you to study “A month by the lake”. It’s a simple, relaxing chronicle, and seems to grasp you away into its’ world. I highly recommend this movie, no violence, clench-your-fingernails-suspense, or promiscuous obsenities. And it comes with likable characters, spacious music, and a incredible setting, build that exquisite.

The days of paying an arm and a leg for G1 Transformers episodes are over. Scream! Factory, LLC, in conjunction with Hasbro, has released the complete first season of Transformers: The New Series, and it’s a proper product! It’s also at a favorable trace, which those who have paid extremely high prices for earlier releases (such as myself) are definite to be pleased.

Packaging: 4 out of 5

It would have been nice if the packaging received the royal treatment that the novel He-Man and She-Ra cartoons received; however this is not so awful. Neat, modern artwork printed on a metallic coating gives the box a highly pleasing and new look; the discs are safely encased in two slim DVD cases (made of soft, shatter-resistant polypropylene), each of which boasts 2-sided artwork visible through the sleeves and the translucent packaging.

Integrity To The Novel Episodes: 5 out of 5.

These are the episodes the diagram I remember seeing them; on VHS tape from my local video store, with a high level of faithfulness to the new sound and visuals. Those familiar with the Rhino releases earlier this decade may be gratified to hear that the *original* soundtrack is presented here (remixed in stereo) without any additional sound effects. Care has also been taken to reconstruct the show’s visuals; “Heavy Metal War” in particular has been restored to its recent greatness, after a painful stint on the Rhino collection, on which the episode was marred by poorly-chosen takes replate with visual errors.

Episode quality and encoding: 4 out of 5.

Each DVD is 7.6 GB in size, and every byte appears to be taken in a high-quality encode of these episodes. Bit rate (a strong determinant of quality on standard DVD) varies from around 4800kbps to fair over 6000 kbps during playback. The encoding is not perfect; an observant glance will seek compression artifacts prove up often on backgrounds and matte paintings; thankfully, characters and arresting scenes indicate up with about as powerful clarity as the transfer probably allowed.

Special features: 3 out of 5 stars

The extras are fully contained on disc 3 of this collection, which I like because it leaves well-known area on the other two discs for high-quality episode encoding. However, the features reach up a bit short in my idea. Though the 20-minute documentary is all-new, it is not as thorough as I hoped it would be or as the packaging suggests. Also this documentary lacked any contribution from the fresh express actors, whose involvement strikes me as important for a five-star special features disc. A printable copy of the “Transport To Oblivion” script (also available on the aging Rhino relase), three Hasbro toy commercials and one PSA (Public Service Announcement) form up the reminder of this light special features allotment. Hopefully Roar! Factory will continue to release the new series on DVD, in which case there are immense opportunities for further special features.

All in all, this is a grand product at a big label, and bears the closest resemblance to the modern broadcast episodes I have seen thus far. Looking forward to future relases, possibly someday on Blu-Ray.

A lot of us grew up on the Generation One or G1 Transformer’s long before a live action film about giant transforming robots could have been plan possible. Now to tie in with this summer’s live action sequel, Transformer’s 2: Revenge Of The Fallen, comes this 3-Disc DVD dwelling containing all sixteen episodes of the first season of this beloved eighties classic. The animation may not have been the best on this series but in the eighties it’s all we needed and our active imaginations filled in the rest. Despite the older less impressive animation these episodes are mild classics to those who remember them and will be more luscious for most of us than the many spinoffs that followed the G1 series. There was something innocent about the series here, maybe because it was so early before the fact that each episode was really unbiased a half hour commercial became favorite knowledge, maybe because here they actually looked like robots in disguise, but maybe fair because they are the ones most of us grew up on and where the whole lasting franchise found it’s niche.

Fans should be very inflamed to possess these episodes in a modern more affordable location. The position is being effect out by Sob! Factory and they have always done an suitable job of providing fans with a lot of well done special features on long awaited sets. This region was originally announced as having a few special features included with more possibly in the works but I’m very joyful to perceive the amount that they have now announced for it and have updated this review to include them. Alot of people who didn’t select the more expensive unique sets are going to be inflamed at the chance to accumulate this one and I know that I can’t wait. I originally gave this state 5 stars honest for the opportunity to gain these classic episodes in a suited DVD residence, but after hearing that they will in fact be restored to modern broadcast versions with a fresh stereo soundtrack created from the unique audio I’m more wrathful than ever.

Some may say that this series was impartial the next step in a colossal advertising campaign for children’s toys but those of us who grew up being entertained by it know that there truly is more to this series than meets the gaze. Thanks For Your Time.

*It now appears that Yowl! will also be releasing Transformer’s G1 in a complete series location this summer. While I contemplate this first season situation is mild gigantic for some I personally am more mad for the complete series.
